Creating a logo for startup validation
Culture Compass navigates its launch
Brand Identity
Culture Compass is a new HR consulting firm focused on workplace engagement. They help organizations build, optimize, and scale their company culture.
The launch of this new business brought with it the need for a logo that would not only embody the company's specific focus, but also cement its legitimacy in a competitive market. Chalkbox has worked in the past with one of the three founders, and we were invited to help them with this project.
Navigating around clichés
One notable challenge presented itself immediately: the word "compass" is visually loaded, and compass visuals are overused across industries. We would need to reinterpret this visual in a way that retained its essence while steering clear of clichés.
Beyond that, doing this work for a start-up always means that there are some questions that don’t have answers. Questions like, “How is your business perceived by your customers?” only work when those customers exest.
In the absence of some of those answers, Chalkbox leaned on the founders, their intentions with the business, and their deep experience. We started with their vision, their intended audience, and the aspirational futures they would help their clients create. This foundational understanding directed our design work.

Destination
The result of our creative work was a clear geometric icon paired with contemporary typography, nodding subtly to technological sophistication (many clients will be tech clients). The icon can be interpreted as both the apex of a compass needle and a path toward a defined future.
The finished logo encapsulates precision, instills confidence, and reflects the company's expertise while remaining accessible. It's a visual narrative of a consultancy that doesn't just navigate but frames the journey towards the quintessential workplace culture.
Collaboration and clarity
"I appreciated seeing the development and progression of the concept, typically those are kept 'behind the curtain.' Chalkbox kept us really involved in the process. It felt like they were invested in our success."
– Sinead, Culture Compass co-founder
Instant credibility
Even businesses built on referrals need to consider their visual brand. Because even though those referrals are 'warmed up,' they will still look for any red flags—reasons to look elsewhere. Remove the red flags, and good things follow.
