Back in November, just before Thanksgiving, our furnace failed its inspection. A small carbon monoxide leak—too low for the alarm to catch, but serious enough to shut everything down.
We replaced it with a heat pump after two cold months. Hyper-efficient, built-in AC, no harmful gases, no flammable fuel—in every way, it’s better than what we had.
Why am I telling you this?
Some things can’t wait until they fail—a furnace, a roof, the brakes on your car, and your health—the risks are too high.
Branding falls into the same category, but it’s tricky. There’s no alarm, screech, or puddle in the basement to warn you when it’s outlived its usefulness. Your brand doesn’t suddenly collapse one day—it’s a slow, invisible leak, quietly eroding your business.
Founders and long-time owners are especially vulnerable. Familiarity hides flaws, and tradition makes change feel dangerous. Emotional connection to an old logo or tagline can keep you from seeing that it no longer works. Often, it takes fresh eyes—from a new generation or an outside perspective—to recognize that the look and messaging from 15 years ago don’t speak to today’s audience.

When this happens, we remind clients: the business is the legacy to protect—not the logo, not the sign, not the color palette. Those are tools. And when tools outlive their usefulness, the smart move is to replace them. Keep the brand sharp; keep the business strong.
